To mark the 50th birthday of the Cobra, a potent concoction of horsepower and star power was convened last Saturday under the name the Ford Cobra Shelby Reunion at the Wally Parks N.H.R.A. Motorsports Museum in Pomona, Calif. Displayed outside the museum entrance were dozens of original Cobras, seldom-seen siblings like the open-cockpit King Cobra racing car and recent continuation models produced at Shelby American’s facility in Las Vegas. In the adjacent parking lot were about 150 cars wearing Shelby nameplates, including an original 1965 Ford Shelby GT350, painted white with twin blue stripes, which ambled away late in the day with roughly the same gait as Clint Eastwood in “Gran Torino.” The slinky Ford GT40 in attendance served as a reminder of Mr. Shelby’s involvement in that bellwether endurance-racing program as well.

In Trento New Jersey the state’s two highest ranking law enforcement officials this morning stressed to the State Police that misconduct will not be tolerated and they will not allow any trooper’s actions to undermine public safety, as appeared to happen in two high-speed escortsnow under investigation, according to a spokesman for Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa.

The message came three days after The Star-Ledger first broke the story that troopers led a high-speed caravan of luxury sports cars down the Garden State Parkway last month. One witness dubbed the escort “Death Race 2012.”

The spokesman, Paul Loriquet, said Chiesa and State Police Superintendent Col. Rick Fuentes met with State Police command staff to discuss a variety of topics, including the March 30 caravan that has resulted in two suspensions.

Chrysler is recalling 9,700 of its 2011-12 Dodge Charger police cruisers because the antilock brakes and electronic stability control may fail. The vehicles’ low-beam headlights may also burn out, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In a report posted on the safety agency’s Web site, Chrysler said the bulb-harness connector could overheat, causing the low beams to cut out. The automaker said it discovered the problem last August when two headlights were returned to the automaker under warranty.
